Krok 1 z 5 · Zasada
Przeczytaj zasadę i obejrzyj tabele. Ramki z napisem Zapamiętaj to najważniejsze reguły.
There is używamy z rzeczownikami w liczbie pojedynczej, a there are z rzeczownikami w liczbie mnogiej.
Kiedy używamy there is / there are?
Konstrukcji there is / there are używamy, gdy chcemy powiedzieć, że coś istnieje lub znajduje się w jakimś miejscu:
- There is a book on the table. – Na stole jest książka.
- There are three cats in the garden. – W ogrodzie są trzy koty.
Uwaga: "there" w tej konstrukcji nie oznacza "tam" – jest to tylko element gramatyczny.
Wszystkie formy w jednej tabeli:
| Zdanie | Jedna rzecz | Kilka rzeczy |
|---|---|---|
| Twierdzenie | There is a chair. | There are two chairs. |
| Przeczenie | There isn't a chair. | There aren't any chairs. |
| Pytanie | Is there a chair? | Are there any chairs? |
| Krótka odpowiedź | Yes, there is. / No, there isn't. | Yes, there are. / No, there aren't. |
Zapamiętaj: there is znaczy 'jest', there are znaczy 'są'. Jeśli chcesz powiedzieć 'tam', dodaj drugie there na końcu zdania: There is a shop there. – Tam jest sklep.
Przykłady
There is a park near my house.
W pobliżu mojego domu jest park.
There are 30 students in my class.
W mojej klasie jest 30 uczniów.
There is some water in the bottle.
W butelce jest trochę wody.
There are two windows in my room.
W moim pokoju są dwa okna.
There is vs There are – kiedy co?
Reguła jest prosta:
- There is (skrót: There's) + rzeczownik w liczbie pojedynczej lub niepoliczalny
- There are + rzeczownik w liczbie mnogiej
| There is (l. pojedyncza) | There are (l. mnoga) |
|---|---|
| There is a dog. | There are two dogs. |
| There is some milk. | There are some apples. |
Zapamiętaj: patrz na rzeczownik, który stoi po there is / there are. Jedna rzecz albo coś niepoliczalnego (milk, water, bread) – is. Dwie rzeczy lub więcej – are.
Gdy wyliczamy kilka rzeczy, formę wybieramy według pierwszej z nich:
- There is a bed, a desk and two chairs. – pierwsza jest jedna rzecz (a bed), więc is
- There are two chairs, a bed and a desk. – pierwsze jest kilka rzeczy (two chairs), więc are
Uwaga: po polsku mówimy 'jest pięć osób', ale po angielsku liczy się liczba mnoga: There are five people, a nie 'There is five people'.
Przykłady
There is a hospital on this street.
Na tej ulicy jest szpital.
There are five rooms in my flat.
W moim mieszkaniu jest pięć pokoi.
There is some water in the glass.
W szklance jest trochę wody.
There is a sofa and two armchairs in the living room.
W salonie jest kanapa i dwa fotele.
Przeczenia – there isn't / there aren't
Przeczenia tworzymy dodając not po is/are:
- There isn't (there is not) + l. pojedyncza
- There aren't (there are not) + l. mnoga
W przeczeniach często używamy any: There isn't any milk. There aren't any chairs.
Zapamiętaj: 'nie ma' można też powiedzieć z no: There is no milk = There isn't any milk. Nie łącz obu form – 'There isn't no milk' to błąd.
Uwaga: rzeczowniki niepoliczalne łączą się z isn't, nawet gdy mowa o dużej ilości: There isn't any bread, a nie 'There aren't any bread'.
Przykłady
There isn't a cinema in my town.
W moim mieście nie ma kina.
There aren't any shops nearby.
W pobliżu nie ma żadnych sklepów.
There isn't any sugar left.
Nie ma już cukru.
There is no time.
Nie ma czasu.
Pytania – Is there? / Are there?
Pytania tworzymy przez inwersję:
- Is there + l. pojedyncza + ...?
- Are there + l. mnoga + ...?
Krótkie odpowiedzi: Yes, there is. / No, there isn't. / Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.
Inwersja to zamiana kolejności: There is a lift. – Is there a lift? (Czy jest winda?)
Pytanie o liczbę: How many + liczba mnoga + are there? How many rooms are there in your flat? – Ile pokoi jest w twoim mieszkaniu?
Zapamiętaj: pytań z there is / there are nie zaczynamy od do ani does. Poprawnie: Is there a park?, a nie 'Does there is a park?'.
Przykłady
Is there a supermarket near here?
Czy jest tu w pobliżu supermarket?
Are there any questions?
Czy są jakieś pytania?
Is there any milk in the fridge?
Czy jest mleko w lodówce?
How many pupils are there in your class?
Ilu uczniów jest w twojej klasie?
There was / There were – czas przeszły
W czasie Past Simple zamieniamy is/are na was/were:
- There was + l. pojedyncza
- There were + l. mnoga
Przeczenia: There wasn't / There weren't. Pytania: Was there? / Were there?
| Zdanie | Jedna rzecz | Kilka rzeczy |
|---|---|---|
| Twierdzenie | There was a shop. | There were two shops. |
| Przeczenie | There wasn't a shop. | There weren't any shops. |
| Pytanie | Was there a shop? | Were there any shops? |
Zapamiętaj: there was znaczy 'był, była, było', there were znaczy 'byli, były'. Pozostałe zasady (some i any, krótkie odpowiedzi) się nie zmieniają.
O przyszłości mówimy there will be – tak samo dla jednej i dla wielu rzeczy: There will be a test on Friday. – W piątek będzie sprawdzian.
Przykłady
There was a big tree in the garden.
W ogrodzie było duże drzewo.
There were many people at the concert.
Na koncercie było wielu ludzi.
Was there a park here before?
Czy wcześniej był tu park?
There wasn't any snow last winter.
Zeszłej zimy nie było śniegu.
Krótkie odpowiedzi: Yes, there is. / No, there aren't.
| Pytanie | Tak | Nie |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a park? | Yes, there is. | No, there isn't. |
| Are there any parks? | Yes, there are. | No, there aren't. |
| Was there a park? | Yes, there was. | No, there wasn't. |
| Were there any parks? | Yes, there were. | No, there weren't. |
W krótkiej odpowiedzi powtarzamy to samo słowo, od którego zaczyna się pytanie: is, are, was albo were.
Uwaga: w odpowiedzi zostaje there, a nie it: Yes, there is, a nie 'Yes, it is'. W odpowiedzi na 'tak' nie skracamy – 'Yes, there's' to błąd.
Zapamiętaj: Is there...? – Yes, there is. / No, there isn't. Are there...? – Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.
Przykłady
Is there a dog in the picture? – Yes, there is.
Czy na obrazku jest pies? – Tak, jest.
Are there any eggs in the kitchen? – No, there aren't.
Czy w kuchni są jakieś jajka? – Nie, nie ma.
Is there a bank near the school? – No, there isn't.
Czy obok szkoły jest bank? – Nie, nie ma.
Were there any problems? – Yes, there were.
Czy były jakieś problemy? – Tak, były.
There is / there are z some i any
| Zdanie | Kilka rzeczy | Niepoliczalne |
|---|---|---|
| Twierdzenie | There are some apples. | There is some juice. |
| Przeczenie | There aren't any apples. | There isn't any juice. |
| Pytanie | Are there any apples? | Is there any juice? |
Some (kilka, trochę) stawiamy w zdaniach twierdzących. Any (żadnych, jakieś) – w przeczeniach i pytaniach.
Wyjątek poznasz później: gdy coś proponujemy albo o coś prosimy, w pytaniu zostaje some – Would you like some juice?
Z jedną policzalną rzeczą używamy a / an, a nie some: There is a banana. There is an orange.
Uwaga: rzeczowniki niepoliczalne (milk, water, bread, sugar, money) łączą się z is, nawet gdy czegoś jest dużo: There is some bread, a nie 'There are some bread'.
Zapamiętaj: some – w twierdzeniach, any – w przeczeniach i pytaniach, a / an – z jedną rzeczą. Więcej przykładów znajdziesz w lekcji some i any.
Przykłady
There are some apples in the basket.
W koszyku jest kilka jabłek.
There isn't any milk in the bottle.
W butelce nie ma mleka.
Are there any biscuits in the box?
Czy w pudełku są jakieś ciastka?
There is an orange on the table.
Na stole jest pomarańcza.
Skrót there's – jak skracać there is i there are
There is skracamy do there's: There's a letter for you. – Jest list do ciebie.
There are w zasadzie się nie skraca. Formę 'there're' czasem słychać w mowie, ale w zeszycie i na sprawdzianie pisz pełne there are.
- there's = there is
- there isn't = there is not
- there aren't = there are not
- there wasn't = there was not, there weren't = there were not
Zapamiętaj: there's = there is. Nie myl tego skrótu ze słowem theirs (ich), które brzmi tak samo.
Przykłady
There's a problem with my computer.
Jest problem z moim komputerem.
There's a spider in the bath!
W wannie jest pająk!
There's a letter for you.
Jest list do ciebie.
There is czy it is – czym się różnią
There is mówi, że coś istnieje lub gdzieś jest – wspominamy o tym pierwszy raz. It is opisuje rzecz, o której już była mowa.
There is a dog in the garden. It is big and black. – W ogrodzie jest pies. Jest duży i czarny.
| There is / There are | It is / They are |
|---|---|
| mówi, że coś jest | opisuje to coś |
| There is a new shop. | It is very cheap. |
| There are two girls outside. | They are my cousins. |
Uwaga: o pogodzie, godzinie i odległości mówimy z it: It is cold. It is five o'clock. It is far. Zdanie 'There is cold' jest błędne.
Zapamiętaj: nowa rzecz – there is. Ta sama rzecz po raz drugi – it is, a w liczbie mnogiej they are.
Przykłady
It is very cold today.
Dzisiaj jest bardzo zimno.
There is a book on the desk. It is mine.
Na biurku jest książka. Jest moja.
There are two boys in the park. They are my brothers.

- There are three shops in my town. – W moim mieście są trzy sklepy.
- There are five people in my family. – W mojej rodzinie jest pięć osób.

Na przykład: There is a park in my town. (W moim mieście jest park.) / There are three schools in this area.
